This weekends tournament sponsored by IDEAL CARAVANS, SABRE SPORTS and DUNLOP, played at the Northumberland Club was a great success.

Entries were up in all events which led to closer more competetive matches.

The major news on the Saturday was that number one seed in both boys U15 and U17 David Elsender had to withdraw due to a groin strain! this was unfortunate but credit to Dave he stayed around both days , supported others and helped out ,he’ll be back next year.

Richard Shellam took most advantage of David’s absence and got through to final of U17’s after beating David Cartwright from Northern 3-2 in a great match .The other semi also went to the wire between Craig Dowie (who had earlier beat 3 seed Matthew Hardy) and 2 seed Richard McCallister, Richard eventually coming back fron 2 nil down to win 3-2. All other events on Saturday went to seeding.

Sunday started early with the U11’s events with favourites Steven Twaddle and Jayne Oswald having no trouble winning their events .

There was a second victim to a pulled groin, Dan Ward had to withdraw from his U15 semi-final with Christian Beck which was tough luck he had been playind well on the saturday! In the other U15 semi Richard Shellam pulled off another upset beating two seed Alex Storey in four games in a good quality match.

The first upset to seedings in the girls came when Sophie Wylde from Alnwick beat two seed Alex Gutteridge from Westoe 3-2 in the U13 semi’s! Sophie couldn’t continue her run losing 3-1 to the event favourite Rachel Oswald in the final. The girls U11 semi between Maria Bainbridge and Lucy Beecroft was tense with both players looking like they could win but Maria eventually came through 3-2 in a great match. Maria was then to lose to another Oswald this time Jayne who won a comfortable 3-0 in the final.

Boys U13 was next for a upset with James Breakey first of all taking out one seed Chris Matthewson in the semi’s then coming from 2-0 down in the final to beat Sean Millington the two seed 10-9 in the fifth, a great effort!

Kimberley Hay the favourite in both U15 and 17’s came through both events beating Anna Oswald in the U15 3-0 but was tested more against Sara Potter in the U17’s winning 3-1 in a good quality match, it’s a great effort by Kim who is still only 13!

The upsets continued for Richard Shellam when he played his U17 final against Richard McCallister the two seed. Shellam again won in 5 after being 7-1 down in the fifth! He then completed a very successful weekend beating Christian Beck in the U15’s final to match the efforts of Kim and win 2 events.

The whole event was played in good spirit well done to everyone!!
