INTER-COUNTY SUCCESS O40’s AND O45’s
Northumbria entered 2 teams into England squash age group inter-counties this season after a few years absence and both teams did very well.
First to play were the ladies O40 team captained by Chris Park. Northumbria were the hosts and the group was to be with Lancashire, Nottingham and Cheshire II. Both Cheshire and Nottingham withdrew leaving only one match between Northumbria and Lancashire.
The Northumbria team was Lesley Vitty, Dawn Ward, Eleanor Bowles, Chris Park and Louise Robertson. On the day Lancashire only turned up with 3 players and Northumbria won all the games therefore gaining automatic promotion for next season.
The men’s team was O45’s captained by Ronnie Freeman. Again we were the hosts and the matches were played at the Northumberland Club in Jesmond. There was 1 withdrawal as Shropshire didn’t send a team ,the 2 other teams were Merseyside and Derbyshire.
The team against Derbyshire was Bryan Beeson, Paul Millington, Glen Ward, Keven Dryden and Norman Broomfield. The team won 5-0 with Millington playing his brother at number 2 string!
In the afternoon against merseyside the team was different- Paul Millington, Kevin Dryden, Norman Broomfield, Ronnie Freeman and Steve Robertson. The result however was the same a 5-0 victory and progress to the promotion group for the second half, where they will play Wiltshire, Dorset & Cambridgeshire.
