Masters Final a Treat!

NORTHUMBERLAND CLUB MASTERS EVENT 2007

The Northumberland club hosted their second Masters event at the weekend organised by club manager Jim Douglas. There were 10 entries making up 2 round robin groups. The matches spread out over the weekend ended with the winner of each group playing a final match for the title!

Maurice Cliff of Tynemouth came through a close group just edging out John Thompson also of Tynemouth and Mark Haigh from Jesmond. The other group was won by Newbiggin age group legend John Smith fresh from representing England at O60 level in Ireland a few weeks previous. The organiser Jim Douglas came second in that group.

The final went all the way. Smith started the stronger winning 9/4 with Cliff looking a little jaded after playing a five setter just 3 hours previous in his group match! Cliff however played better in the second winning it 9/6 although made to work hard all the way. Smith came back to win the 3rd comfortably and then led 8-7 in the 4th with match ball Cliff came back to 8-8 then was match ball down again at 9-8 before levelling the match at 2-2 with a 10/9 game! Fifth game was in the end one sided with Cliff looking exhausted and Smith winning 9/1 and taking the title.

This event although new is well appreciated by the competitors and hopefully will grow from year to year thanks to Jim Douglas
