JUNIORS DOING WELL AROUND THE COUNTRY
In recent weeks our juniors have competed in a few tournaments with good success.
First up was the Northumberland Open at the Northumberland Club. It was U13 and U17 event for both boys and girls. The U13’s was a big success for Richard Ridgeway of Jesmond who after beating higher ranked Northumbrian Simon Grabham in early rounds he won his way through to the final losing in a competetive 3-0 to durham’s Luke Mabbutt.
Girls U13 was an all Northumbrian 1,2,3 and 4. Lucy Beecroft and Maria Bainbridge played the final with Lucy winning through in a close match and Jayne Oswald beat Emma Haley for the 3rd place.
Boys U17 had further success with Dan Ward beating 2 seed Robert Harrison from Dyrham to set up a final against Northumbrian number 1 Richard Shellam. The final was a classic with Ward performing really well throughout and Shellam had to really dig deep to outlast Ward in the 5th, greta match.
Next up was Newton Aycliffe’s first Junior tournament, for U11, U13 and U15’s. There was a strong Northumbrian entry in most events.
Boys u13 again was a good event for Richard Ridgeway, he made his way to the final beating Stephen Twaddle his jesmond club mate 3-2 in the semis before once again losing to Luke Mabbott of Durham 3-0. Elliott Carr of Northern came 3rd with Stephen Twaddle 4th.
Maria Bainbridge played well through the whole tournament never dropping a game in the U13 event beating Jessica Winder from Cumbria 3-0 in the final. Emma Haley finished in 3rd position.
Elliott Park finished a credible 4th in the U15 boys event.
On the same weekend in Pontefract Lucy Beecroft from Tynemouth was competing in the English Open. She did very well winning the U13 event beating Eleanor Norrish of Yorkshire 3-0.
Coming up on 27th and 28th of December is the North of England Open at Jesmond. this is an England squash Silver event for all ages.
