British & Scottish Junior Open

January 17, 2008 No Comments »

The British and Scottish junior opens are two of the most prestigious Junior tournaments in the world. Some of Northumbria’s juniors competed in these events over the Christmas period with some success!

Kimberley Hay and Christian Beck played in Edinburgh between christmas and the new year. Hay was seeded number 1 in the U17 event , she reached the final reasonably comfortably where she met the Indian 5/8 seed Anwesha Reddy. Reddy had upset the 2 seed earlier in the event and also upset Hay beating her 9/3 9/5 10/8.

Beck played in the boys U17 and won his first match against South African Ruan Metz to reach the last 32. He then lost out to Scot Ian Jubb 3-0.

There were 4 juniors travelling to play in the British Open in Sheffield soon after the new year. Kimberley Hay was this time seeded 3/4 but unfortunately didn’t reach her seeding losing out in the quarter-finals to Egyptian Salma Nasser 3-1. She ended up finishing 8th.

Both Lucy Beecroft and Maria Bainbridge played in the U13 event. Beecroft did very well beating Warwickshire’s 9/16 seed Lucy Pallet 3-0 in the first round to reach the last 16. In the last 16 she narrowly lost to Frances Marie Stephan 3-2 and played off to finish position 13th. Bainbridge lost closely in the first round to Gloucestershire’s Eleanor Lake and then won her 2 following consolation matches.

Richard Shellam was the counties only boy competitor playing in the u17 event. He lost in the prelims to New Zealander Lance Beddoes 3-1 and than reached the semi-final of the consolation.
