This event had a Silver status from England squash and with big ranking points at stake many high ranked players made the journey. It was a great chance for our junior players to compete against some of Englands best. Held between Christmas and New Year on 27th/28th. With matches from 9am til 9pm on the first day and similar on the finals day Jim douglas from the Northumberland Club had his hands full!
Boys U19- Yorkshires number 1 seed Andrew Widdison ranked at 5 in the country sailed through this event dropping no games and winning the final against Chris Rusling also of Yorkshire comfortably.
Girls U19 – This was very much a local affair with Hannah Cliff from Tynemouth beating Jesmonds Sarah Oswald and Durhams Heather Graham to take the title.
Boys U17 – Alex Storey did the best of our county’s players reaching the quarter-finals losing to eventual finalist Adam Auckland. Ben Rodgers from Devon ranked at 13 in the country won the event in a great final. Chris Clinton from Sunderland convincingly won the plate.
Girls U17 – Anna Oswald beat Sarah Dowson to reach the semis, where she lost to Katie Smith from Yorkshire. Katie then lost to englands U15 number 3 Emily whitlock in the final.
Boys U15 – Local interest was in the plate, County champion Sean Millington beat Harry Carr (Northern) in the semis then Jesmonds Elliott Park in the final. Main event was won by number 1 seed Yorkshire’s Taminder gata Aura beating Jonathan Honeyman in the final.
Girls U15 – Northumbrian entries once again went into the plate with Catherine de Kiewiet winning the plate. Main event again was won by Yorkshire’s Millie Pugh.
Boys U13 – A massive 31 entries and a great event full of upsets. Hamish Faulkner won the event beating number one seed Brian Harvey in the semi then 2 seed Russel clarke in a great final. Stepen Twaddle reached the second round whilst other Northumbrian players competed in the plate with Simon Grabham reaching the final.
Girls U13 – This event brought Northumbrias second winner when Lucy Beecroft beat Jayne Oswald in the final . Emma Haley made the plate final losing to Cumbrias Katie Penrice.
Great event hope it will be even bigger next time!!
