END OF SEASON MASTERS EVENT 2008.
The Northumberland club was the venue for the 3rd Northumberland Masters event. Organised by Jim Douglas there was Mens O40 and O50 event and a ladies O40’s.
The O40’s was won by Russel Hunter form Alnwick. He had two tough matches in the round robin format beating John Peacock and Mark Haigh both 3-2 taking the title.
The Ladies O40’s was a straight final between Eleanor Bowles and Chris Park, both Jesmond players and good fiends. As usual they went to the wire with Park winning on this occasion 3-2.
The O50’s had the biggest entry with 3 round robin groups of 3. There was an early upset with top seed and England player Colin Shields losing to Tynemouth’s John Thompson 3-2. Shields however still qualified to the semis in second place in his group. The other groups were won by Kevin Dryden and John Smith.
In the semis Shields beat Dryden and Smith beat Thompson. In the final despite his early round loss Shields lived up to his number 1 seed billing winning the title.
