Northumberland Junior Open U13/U17

JUNIOR SEASON OPENER AT NORTHUMBERLAND CLUB

The Northumberland Club hosted a season opening tournament for the juniors with U13 and U17 events. It was an England Squash Bronze level event with ranking points up for grabs.

GIRLS U13 – Lucy Beecroft bt Maria Bainbridge 3-0

Plate – Emma Haley bt

There was a small entry in this event but a very high quality final between 2 home players. Lucy Beecroft is ranked at number 3 in the country and Maria Bainbridge at number 10. They have played many times and it is always close, and despite the 3-0 scoreline there wasn’t much between them, Beecrofts more consistancy won the important points.

BOYS U13 – Edward Stalworthy bt Elliott Carr

Plate – Dan Wareing bt Michael Graham

A 16 draw with a lot of local players entered, of those players 2 players excelled. Dan Wareing pushed number 3 seed Alex McFarlane all the way in the first round narrowly losing in the 5th game and then went on to win the plate 3-0 all the way. Elliott Carr was seeded 2 in the event and made it to the final where he did all he could but couldn’t get the better of Yorkshire’s Ed Stalworthy who had beaten number one seed Jack Cooper in the semi final.

GIRLS U17 – Sarah Dowson bt Helen Dowson 3-0

Plate – Samantha Ward bt Jayne Oswald 3-0

It was a family affair and not for the first time in the U17 girls. Twins Sarah and Helen Dowson have played eachother many times and both play at a very good standard. Sarah is the higher ranked and duely won but this was much closer than in the past with Helen fast improving and closing the gap. In the Plate Sam Ward beat fellow Northumbrian Jayne Oswald.

BOYS U17 – Robert Harrison bt Jonny Honeyman 3-1

Plate – Sean Millington bt Cole Windscheffel 3-1

This was a fast hard hitting final crying out for a little composure but very entertaining none-the-less. Honeyman took the first and led in the second befroe allowing top seed Harrison to gain the upperhand which he kept til the end winning 3-1. Local interest ended in the semi where Christian Beck lost to Honeyman. Sean Millington beat Cole Windscheffel 3-1 in the plate final.

The weather tried it’s best but didn’t dampen the spirits of the event. Thanks goes to Jim Douglas the event organiser.
