North of England Junior Squash Championships 2008-12-23
Local Players perform fantastic in Squash Event.
The North of England Junior Squash Championships sponsored by Henderson Insurance Brokers was held at the Northumberland Club in Jesmond over the weekend of the 20/21 December 2008. The competition attracted 81 entries from predominantly the Northern counties of Northumbria, Durham& Cleveland,Cumbria and Yorkshire. Local players performed exceptionally well and collected 5 of the 7 main titles covering Boys u13,15,17 & 19 and Girls u13,15 & 19. Lucy Beecroft from Tynemouth Squash Club has recently achieved the England No 1 ranking at the u13 level and she convincingly won the u15 title whilst Emma Haley ( Northumberland Club-NC) won the u13 event.
The girls u19 match was a close match between Hannah Cliff (Tynemouth) and Sarah Oswald (NC) with some excellent squash played by both girls. At 2-1 games to Hannah, she stormed away in the fourth game to collect another title.
The Boys competitions were very exciting with some great play demonstrated at all levels. Richard Shellam (NC) won the u19 title and boosted his confidence for his matches in the British Open in January at Sheffield. In the Boys u13 competition, 25 players took part starting their matches early on Saturday morning and after 4 rounds the 2 top seeds Elliott Carr (NC & Northern) and Alex McFarlane contested the final. Elliott proved too strong for Alex and added the North of England title to his county closed title.
In the Boys u15, Tom Lee from Pontefract beat 3 players from the NC including the No 1 seed Elliott Park in the semi’s and then won the final beating Matthew Robinson ( Newton Aycliffe).
In the Boys u17 event, Daniel Hockburn ( Hartlepool) was in a class of his own and although David Gardner pushed him hard in the final, there was only going to be one winner.
