The junior section of Hexham Squash Club is thriving after organising top-level coaching for youngsters keen on trying the sport.

Jim Chambers, the club’s junior coach, attracted 40 juniors ranging in age from seven to 16 to a session with Northumbria champion Dave Barnett.

After a few minutes’ warm-up, Barnett gave expert tuition to small groups of juniors of graded ability using energetic coaching routines which had youngsters dashing about the court to drive, volley and drop-shot the ball.

The juniors then had the opportunity to put Dave’s advice into practice by playing three-quarters and short matches.

Parts of the sessions were videoed and replayed, providing entertainment and some hilarity afterwards.

The coaching sessions were followed by the traditional meal of sausage and chips at Hexham Golf Clubhouse, and the afternoon ended with a squash and general knowledge quiz organised by club member David Fairbairn.
