The Northumbria County Squash Under 15 Boys’ Team travelled to Coventry on Sunday 21st March to compete in the final round of the England Inter-County Trophy Event. The team had already played in two earlier rounds in November and February and had now reached the semi-finals of the Plate.
The team in this round was not at full strength due to two county players being unavailable to make the long journey and special thanks to Dan Wareing and Harry Steward who stepped in with only a few days notice. However the players were determined to prove themselves and rose to the occasion with fantastic team spirit.
The team of Simon Graham, Richard Ridgway, Stephen Twaddle, Dan Wareing and Harry Steward played Suffolk first and got off to a brilliant start by beating them 5-0. This put Northumbria through to the final against Warwickshire who had only narrowly beaten Sussex 3-2 in the other semi-final.
In the final Steward played well and was only just pipped at the post 2-3. Wareing comfortably won his match 3–0 while Twaddle carried away a similarly decisive 3-0 win. Graham played with convincing style to win his match 3-1, giving Northumbria a 3-1 lead. Ridgway had a tense match against Warwickshire’s Harley Flood, formerly ranked England no.3 as an under 13 player, and was defeated 0–3 although not without a fight, especially in the lengthy last game. However as Northumbria had already secured three matches, the final result of 3-2 was enough to claim them victory and the Trophy title.
This is a fantastic result and all the boys must be congratulated for playing to a high standard and for committing to such a long day. Many thanks to all the parents who supported the boys throughout the rounds.
