Northumbria was represented in several events at the Abbeydale Junior Open in Sheffield during the weekend of 10/11 April 2010.
In the Boys’ U13 event, Alex Robertson sailed through the first two rounds but struggled against final winner Toby Pratt in an early Sunday morning match. He then comfortably beat Dan Zaidi 3-0 to finish in an excellent 3rd place. Jamie Todd, seeded 12th, lost his first match to Pratt but convincingly won the next three rounds with some great shots to finish well up in 9th position.
The Boys’ U15 attracted a large entry, including several talented U13 players. Simon Graham, seeded 9th, came up against national U13 no.1 player James Peach in the second round. However this was Simon’s only defeat and he finished in a creditable 5th place. This event was won by Oliver Turner from Harley Flood in an exciting 3-2 match which demonstrated the high quality of squash in this age group.
Laura Neill played consistently well and with great composure in the Girls’ U13 group, despite being only aged 9! She finished in 5th place and is certainly a talented youngster to watch out for in the future.
Beth Robertson competed in the Girls’ U17 event but had trouble finding her form on this occasion. Sam Ward gained the highest final position of the Northumbria juniors, finishing in 2nd place to Lucy Townley in the Girls’ U19 event. The girls were closely matched and Sam played very well but couldn’t quite get into the fourth game and was defeated 3-1.
Congratulations to all the players for some fine performances.
