Northumbria Squash, Report for 2011/12 Season

The league season came to an exciting conclusion with Northumberland Club, Jesmond, hosting a series of semi-finals and finals from Wednesday 2nd May through to Saturday 5th May. Ten teams from across the region fought their way through to the finals of five different competitions to celebrate the end of the season in style, with some great squash being played at all the different levels.

At the highest level in the Northumbria Cup the top four men’s teams and top four women’s teams squared up on Friday and Saturday night to fight for the honours. In the ladies final Northern fielded a powerful team and ran out comfortable winners beating Northumberland Club ?????. The top two men’s teams in the region were once again Westoe and Northumberland Club with the former notching up  a close 3-2 victory over their main rivals.

This season saw the re-introduction of knock out competitions for all the other teams in the league below the top levels. After some very close semi-finals on Wednesday and Thursday the finals produced some very tight finishes in the Men’s competition. In League Cup A, Tynemouth overcame Northern by a 3-2 margin and in League Cup B, Ashington also had a 3-2 victory over their old rivals Consett. A strong squad from Tynemouth were able to secure a 5-0 victory over Westoe in the Women’s League Cup final.

The night concluded with the presentation of awards for the above and to all of the league winners, runners-up and divisional players of the year, along with badges for representing the County in the national leagues. The awards were presented by Kevin Whitfield of league sponsors Whitfield Building Services.
