Northumbria Squash Junior County Monrad 2016

Over the 10th and 11th of September the County’s best junior players converged on the Northumberland Club for the annual County Monrad event. The top eight players from each age group were invited from both the boys and the girls ranking lists to fight it out for a place on Northumbria teams competing in the Junior Inter County Championships.

I’m sure all who attended would agree there was some fantastic squash played, particularly in the last round when standards start to come closer together.

Zoe Shipsey stormed to victory in the girls U11 event without dropping a game whilst Katie Barker proved equally as strong in the girls U13. Megan Evans only dropped one game on route to winning the girls U15s and Lowri Waugh surprised the seedings and stopped Northern taking victory in all the girls events by edging out Erin Vitty. Josie Barker won an entertaining U19 competition ahead of Georgia Webster and Amy Rowell who were second and third respectively.

In the boys U11s Hexham’s Tom Jepson continued where he left off last season with a strong final win over Alnwick’s Calum Wilkie who twice came back from 2-0 down to reach the final. Tynemouth’s Tom Walsh showed us all his shots to comfortably win the U13 event ahead of Sam Sweeney and Jesmond’s Harry Little proved too good for Nathan Dobson in the final of the U15s. Jesmond provided us with another quality performance in the U17 winner Max Forster but a mention should go to Tynemouth’s Lennox Lockwood who finished 2nd despite being seeded only 7th. The boys U19 event was one way traffic in the shape of Northern’s Michael Mattimore whilst Ben Waugh upset the seedings to reach the final.

Thanks to all the players and parents who attended and thank you for your continued support of junior squash in Northumbria.

The next county coaching will be taking place in the October half-term holiday, boys on the Wednesday 26th and girls on Thursday 27th. An email will be sent out over the next few days to confirm the details and to open invitations.
