British Open Masters 2022

The British Open Masters’ Championships 2022 was held in Hull last week, and there were a few players from our region’s clubs taking part!

In the O65’s event Adrian Alderton (Hexham) comfortably progressed through to the quarter-final stage, where he faced no.2 seed John Guyatt. Unfortunately, Adrian lost out in a competitive 3-0, while his opponent proceeded through the draw to win the O65’s title!

Tony Pensom (Consett) participated in the O70’s event where he upset the seeding in round 2, beating the 5/8 seed 3-2 to move to the quarter-finals. In the quarters Tony faced 3/4 seed Terry Belshaw but despite taking a 2-0 lead, he was defeated 3-2, 11-9 in the 5th! Tony’s opponent narrowly lost 3-2 in the final!

John Smith of Newbiggin represented Northumbria in the O75’s where he was seeded 3/4. John moved through to the semi-final unscathed to set up a match with the top seed, and last year’s O70’s champion, Barry Featherstone. Unfortunately, John lost in a well-contested 3-0, while Barry went on to win the event!

Well done to Adrian, Tony and John on their performances last week, all losing to the eventual winners/runners up in their events (unlucky!)
