O65 Inter-County Stage 1 held at the Village Hotel Bury on 4th March.
Teams involved: Lancashire (host) Cumbria, Merseyside & Northumbria.
Northumbria’s order: 1. Andrew Wilkinson (Hexham) 2. Adrian Alderton (Hexham) 3. Tony Penson (Consett) 4. Alan Coates (Eldon)
Match 1 v Lancashire
Andrew was 1st up against Allen Barwise, Andrew knew he was in for a hard game & so it proved Allen ran out the winner in 3 straight games (11/6 11/5 11/3).
Adrian was next and it took him a while to get into his stride coming back from 2-1 down before taking the last 2 games quite easily (8/11 11/6 11/9 3/11 4/11).
3rd game W/O to Tony
Result: Northumbria won 2-1.
Match 2 v Cumbria
Andrew was up against Terry Belshaw, the 1st game could have gone either way, Andrew just taking it 12-10 The next one was easy for Andrew 11-3 but Terry came back strong in the 3rd sneaking it 11-9. In the 4th Andrew got back in front early & came out the winner 11-7 (12/10 11/3 9/11 11/7).
Adrian was playing Collis Sheik. Adrian played solid from the start & raced to a 3-0 win, only the 1st being close (12/10 11/6 11/5).
Tony was next on playing Rob Gaskin. Tony played a solid game beating Rob 3-0 (11/9 11/5 11/5).
Result: Northumbria won 3-0.
Match 3 v Merseyside
Adrian was playing no 1 in this game against Pete Sharples. An easy 3-0 win for Adrian, I think Pete had his mind on getting his flight back to the Isle of Man (11/2 11/4 11/7).
Tony played Les Sharples who was also from the Isle of Man. Again Tony had no problems dispatching Les in 3 (11/3 11/8 11/4).
3rd game W/O to Alan.
Result: Northumbria won 3-0.
The final group standings were as follows:
Northumbria: 33 points
Lancashire: 29 points
Cumbria: 13 points
Merseyside: 2 points
This sees us progress to the inter-county finals later in the year!
