Our women’s senior team travelled to Bury on 19th March to play Lancashire and Ulster in stage 1 of the Intercounty Championships with the aim of progressing to the finals of the event!
Our 5-player team was: Rebecca Symmons, Harriet Wight, Tegan Younger, Mia Smith & Amanda King.
Fixture 1 against Ulster was a walkover in our favour as their team, unfortunately, had to withdraw, giving us the maximum 15 points.
Fixture 2 saw our team face off against a strong Lancashire team and we lost the first 2 matches, as both Amanda and Mia lost 3-1 in very tight encounters! At no.3 Tegan battled her way back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and keep us in the tie, but Harriet, unfortunately, lost at no.2 in another close game. Rebecca finished off the fixture by giving us another win and adding to our points tally, but it wasn’t quite enough for us to finish top of the group!
Group Standings
Lancashire – 28 points
Northumbria – 24 points
Ulster – 0 points
The team’s 2nd place finish was still enough to progress to the next round and will see us play in the promotion group on 13th-14th May! A top 2 finish would promote us to the Premier Division of the Intercounty Championships next season!
Our Men’s Senior team will also be involved that week as they aim to remain in the extremely competitive Premier Division!
