Men’s & Women’s Senior ICC 2023

Our men’s and women’s senior teams were in Wolverhampton on the 13th & 14th May to compete in the Inter County Championship finals! The men were in the premier division, while the women played in the promotion group and aimed to finish top 2 to qualify for the premier.

MEN’S TEAM
Our men’s squad was as follows: Micheal Mattimore, Liam Gutcher, Cai Younger, Dave Barnett, Chris Boyer & Alex Robertson.

It’s always challenging in the men’s premier division as the opposition teams are often littered with current and former pro players. In the opening fixture against Sussex this was no different, their squad boasted the talents of Oliver Pett (former top 50 in the world) along with Noah Meredith and Jonah Bryant, young English talents both currently around the top 200 in the world. Sussex proved too strong and beat us 5-0, but all the matches were very competitive.

The team received a bye in the next round and moved straight into the final match of the weekend against Essex, headed by WR #115 Owain Taylor. Michael managed to win a game against Owain but eventually lost 3-1, however, wins from Liam and Cai kept us in with a shout. Unfortunately, Chris and Alex lost 3-1 at 4 and 5 respectively giving Essex the overall win, 3-2!

This saw us finish 6th overall, keeping our spot in the premier for another season!

WOMEN’S TEAM
The women’s team of 5 was: Josie Barker, Harriet Wight, Tegan Younger, Emma Turnbull & Lesley Vitty.

The first fixture of the weekend was a clean sweep for the women, taking it 5-0 v Essex to advance to the 2nd round to face no.2 seeds Middlesex. Harriet’s battle for a 3-2 victory wasn’t enough as we lost 4-1 to the 2nd seeds which, unfortunately, meant we dropped down to the 3rd/4th playoff and couldn’t get promoted!

In the 3rd/4th playoff, the team faced SE Wales. Not to be deterred by missing out on promotion Harriet, Tegan, Emma and Lesley all won their matches to clinch 3rd place with a 4-1 victory!
