Juniors from Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside & Yorkshire descended on our county for the North region Stage 1 of the Junior Inter County Championships. In the boy’s event, 8 teams in each age category progress to the finals, and 4 runners up go onto the plate. In the girl’s event, 8 U13s teams, 6 U11s and U15s teams and 4 U17s and U19s teams qualify for the finals, with 4 teams in each age category through to the plate.
We fielded a team in each of the age groups from U11 to U19, except for GU11, here’s how they got on:
Team: Huey Lamb, Tom Young, Olan Taylor & Seth Jones
The U11s had a tough group that included Yorkshire and Lancashire B. The team lost both fixtures to finish 3rd meaning they won’t progress to the finals, but it was a great learning experience for the boys.
Team: James Southerm William Brocklehurst, Mateo Radley, Magnus McKay & Kiran Sakar
Our U13s put in an excellent performance, overcoming Lancashire 3 games to 2 and then only dropped 2 games to beat Cheshire 5-0 and finish top of their group. On to the finals.
Team: Emma Little, Lucy Ulyatt, Meera Jatania & Louisa Westwood
The U13s went unbeaten in their group but only finished 2nd, as Yorkshire earned 15 more points to edge into 1st. The team were still rewarded with a place in the main finals.
Team: Duncan Rutherford, Sam Tufton, Aidan Mahoney, James Ulyatt & Leo Blackett
A dominating display saw the team lose just 1 game from 10, as the U15s beat Yorkshire B 5-0 and Lancashire 4-1 to advance to the finals.
Team: Rebecca Little, Isla Cook & Ebony Holmes
The girls had just a single game in their group and lost 2-1 against a tough Yorkshire team. A place in the plate finals as one of the top runners-up teams has been confirmed.
Team: Matthew Ansell, Dan Toole, Tom Watts, Ethan Brown & Euan Wayman
We lost our opening game 5-0 to a very strong Yorkshire team, who went on to beat Cumbria by the same scoreline and took top spot in the group. Our last match against Cumbria would decide who progressed to the plate event and our boys took the victory, 4 games to 1.
Team: Shae Paterson, Ava Naisbitt & Kate Naisbitt
Another group with a single game against Yorkshire, and the result couldn’t have been much closer! Despite a 2-1 loss, we were tied on 92 points each, but Yorkshire snuck into top spot on game difference. The girls have been confirmed in the plate finals as one of the top runners-up teams.
Team: Lewis Cruz, Joe Elliott, Ben Tudor & Tom Jepson
The U19s played extremely well to finish in 2nd place, just 11 points off of 1st place Yorkshire. Their wins against Cheshire, Cumbria & Lancashire see them advance to the main finals.
Team: Mia Smith, Annabelle Satow & Zoe Shipsey
In their only game of stage 1 the U19s beat Lancashire by 2 games to 1 and secured their place in the main finals stage.
Congratulations to all our teams, 5 progressing to the main finals and 1 to the plate while the fate of the GU15s & GU17s is still to be announced. Also a big thank you to The Northumberland Club, Newcastle University and Tynemouth for being great hosts.
