Northumbrians at the Nationals 2011

Again this years Nationals took place in Manchester in February and there were many Northumbrians who made the journey to compete.

CAROLE PAGE was the most successful in winning the womens 0ver 45 event. Page was tested in all 3 matches with 3-1 wins in the quarters and semis. The final was even closer with Page going 2-0 down before fighting back to 2-2 and then recovering once more from 5-2 down in the fifth to beat the number one seed Heather Tweedle.


STEVE CALVERT was seeded 9/16 but advanced beyond his seeding to the quarter-final where he lost to the ¾ seed Nigel Willis.

JOHN EVANS won his first round in the O55  but lost out in the last 16 to Simon Rollington after a brutal match losing 10-8 in the fifth.

RUSSEL HUNTER lost out in his first match of the O45 to Cumbrias Tony Hetherington.

STEVE CUBBINS also competed in the O55 event losing out in the first round to John Duckworth.

The main events for the Mens and Ladies had qualifying round and 5 Northumbrian players attempted to make it through. SARAH BOWLES was the closest to making it through losing out to Yorkshires Fiona Moverley 3-1 in the last round.

In the mens both MATT SAMPSON and RICHARD SHELLAM won their first match and lost out in the second round, MATTHEW HARDY and LIAM GUTCHER both lost in their first matches.
