Northumbria County Closed 2014 – Finals Night

A few words from our roving reporter – Lucy Beecroft to wrap up the weekend…

The finals day didn’t fail to excite with all main draw finals starting from 5:30pm on court 5 at Tynemouth Squash Club. With a full house of spectators waiting for the action to start.

Mens B Final
Was fought out between top seed Alex Robertson and Sean Millington, who upset the number 2 seed in the semi finals. The game was neck and neck all the way but the home crowd advantage seemed to allow Sean to pull through and win the very tight game 3-2, well done Sean.

SH2202Ladies Final
Hannah Cliff and Sam Ward, both Leeds University students, were up next. A tight first game saw Hannah go 10-8 up and looked to clinch the first game of the match, however Sam fought back to win it 14-12. The second and third were more comfortable for Sam as Hannah never looked to get into her full stride, making a few errors and allowing Sam to get a steady lead in both games. This was Sam’s third county title and fourth final in a row, well done Sam!

SH2201Mens Final
The main event was soon in full swing with top two seeds Dave Barnett and Liam Gutcher going head to head for the title. Barnett won a tight first game to lead the race for the title but Gutcher fought back and managed to level out the match at 1-1. Barnett however looked strong and closed out the match with a 3-1 win. Another title to add to the collection, well done Dave!

SH2195Mens O45 Final
was a tremendous battle between Glenn Ward and Russell Hunter, who both kept running until the very end. After Russell levelled the match at 1-1 with a 16-14 win in the second game it looked as though Glenn might have run out of steam. Glenn however came back and showed no mercy to win the match 3-1, well done Glenn.

Womens O40 Final
This included another member of the Ward family as Dawn took on Louise Robertson. With both ladies having extremely tough 3-2’s in the semis it was a case of who had the most left in the tank! On this occasion Dawn won 3-0, so that was 3 titles for the Wards! Well done Dawn.

That’s the end of another years County Closed, we look forward to seeing you all again next year! Well done to everyone who participated!
