British National Masters Squash Championships 2024

The British National Masters Championships was held in Nottingham last week (7th – 11th Feb) and a whole host of players were representing our county across the various age groups.

Amanda King (Northumberland Club) won her opening round match, beating her higher-seeded opponent 3-0. In the quarter-final, Amanda lost to the 2 seed Leonie Holt, who went on to finish 2nd.

Jamies Douglas won 2 matches to advance to the semi-final stage, but his run ended there, losing 3-0 to the 2nd seed and event runner-up.

Lizzie Little (Northumberland Club) was the 3/4 seed in the O40’s and progressed to the semi-final to face the top seed and defending champion Amina Halal. Lizzie went 2-0 down but battled back to 2-2, unfortunately losing 11-8 in the 5th! Lizzie went on to finish 3rd overall.

Richard Bradley (Tynemouth) lost his opening round 3-1 in a competitive match against the higher-ranked Peter Lonsdale. Richard dropped into the plate event and won the final 3-0 (11-4 / 11-3 / 11-1).

Bryan Beeson (Northumberland Club) came into the event as the defending champion. Bryan had a few tricky encounters during his title defence attempt, but he beat 5/8 seed Eamonn Price in the final 3-1 to retain his title.

Steve Calvert (Tynemouth) won his 1st round match, however, he was defeated by Teejay Sogunro 3-0 in the next round.

Alan Coates (Eldon) fell to his 1st round opponent in the main draw but won his next 2 matches in the plate to reach the final. This proved one match too far as he lost 3-0 (13-11 / 11-7 / 11-4) to finish as plate runner-up.

Tony Pensom (Consett) progressed to the quarter-final by beating his higher-seeded opponent in round 1. However, he lost 3-0 to 3/4 seed and event runner-up Geoff Redfern.

Mike Cherryman (Consett/Hexham) had to withdraw from the O75s after feeling unwell before his round 1 match.

Well done to Bryan on retaining his MO60’s title and to everyone else who played and represented Northumbria. We also wish Mike a quick recovery.
