ICC O65 Stage 1 2024

The O65 Inter-County Stage 1 was held at the Redcar Squash club on 16th March.

Teams involved: Durham & Cleveland (host), Lancashire and Northumbria.

Northumbria’s order: 1. Jon Evans (Tynemouth) 2. Steve Ross (Concordia) 3. Alan Coates (Eldon) 4. Colin McNestrie (Tynemouth)

Match 1 Northumbria vs Durham & Cleveland

Alan had a fantastic game see-sawing back and forth with Alan holding his nerve to take the final game.
Alan Coates 3-2 Joe McAuley (8/11, 11/8, 11/8, 7/11, 11/7)

Jon was making his debut for the O65’s and comfortably won in three while entertaining the gallery in the 3rd game.
Jon Evans 3-0 Phil Davidson (11/4, 11/8, 16/14)

Steve (the current county O65 champion) was also making his debut at this level. Steve took a while to get the hang of Brian’s game but eventually came through.
Steve Ross 3-1 Brian Duke (12/10, 9/11, 11/4, 11/6)

Result: Northumbria won 3-0.

A good start to the campaign now to watch Lancashire who were without their top two players Allen Barwise and Ian Bradburn.

Match 2 Durham & Cleveland vs Lancashire

Joe McAuley 3-0 Phil Shacklady (11/9, 11/8, 11/8)

Phil Davidson 3-1 Al Connor (11/7, 4/11, 11/7, 11/7)

Brian Duke 1-3 Bob Holdsworth (11/9, 8/11, 11/13, 5/11)

Result: Durham & Cleveland won 2-1.

Match 3 Northumbria vs Lancashire

Alan now playing Lancashire’s ‘fresh’ player started well and had match ball in the third. He didn’t make the same mistake in fourth.
Alan Coates 3-1 Ken Harrison (12/10, 11/6, 10/12, 11/4)

Jon was enjoying the 1st game before deciding that perhaps 2 games in such a short space of time required a serious approach.
Jon Evans 3-0 Al Connor (12/10, 11/4, 11/4)

Steve was really playing his heart out in this match with Bob also playing his part. Both players came off exhausted and either one could have won it.
Steve Ross 3-2 Bob Holdsworth (13/11, 5/11, 11/7, 11/13, 11/9)

Result: Northumbria won 3-0.

MVP of the day goes to Steve Ross for his entertaining game against Bob Holdsworth.

The final group standings were as follows:

Northumbria: 18 points
Durham & Cleveland: 10 points
Lancashire: 7 points

This sees us progress to the inter-county finals later in the year.

Well played all. Great weekend.

Full Results.

Alan Coates (Capt)
