Northumbria Open 2024

Following an action-packed weekend filled with intense and high-calibre squash, the Northumbria Open 2024 came to an exciting conclusion as we crowned the tournament champions.

Home-favourite Hannah Cliff downed several world-ranked players on her way to the final, where she faced 3 seed and WR#163 Isabel McCullough, who defeated top seed Ellie Jones to reach the last 2.

Cheered on by the crowd, Hannah put on an excellent performance, going toe-to-toe with Isabel. However, McCullough showed her class in the crucial points at the end of each game, winning 3-0 (11/9, 11/9, 11/7) to be crowned the Northumbria Open Women’s Champion.

The men’s final also saw 2 slightly unexpected names, with 9/16 seed Sam Osborne-Wylde (WR#506) facing off against 4 seed Martin Ross (WR#331). Both players caused major upsets, knocking out the 1 and 2 seeds respectively to earn their spot in the final.

Both players showed incredible retrieving and shot-making to entertain the capacity crowd. It was Osborne-Wylde who shone brightest with a nearly faultless performance, and despite Ross’ tenacity, he took the match 3-0 (11/6, 11/6, 11-7) to win the Northumbria Open Men’s title.

It was a high-quality encounter between [3/4] Chris Thompson (Northern) & [2] Ross Jowsey (Newcastle Uni), which saw plenty of lung-busting rallies, but Chris edged it to become the A Event Champion 3-1 (12/10, 11/9, 8/11, 11/8).

Unseeded Sahil Paraby did well to cut through the draw to reach the final, but it proved 1 step too far, as 3/4 seed Ben Tudor (Northern) won after just holding off a late comeback in a 3rd game tiebreaker 3-0 (11/7, 11/9, 12/10).

The C event was a battle of the top seeds. [1] John Armstrong (Newbiggin) took the 1st game but the 2nd seed Ian Charlton (Benwell Hill) responded to take a 2-1 lead. Despite a last-game surge from John, Ian won 12-10 in the 4th to claim the title! 3-1 to Ian (9/11, 11/4, 11/5, 12/10).

Top seed Angus Dean (Northumberland) showed excellent speed and retrievals to put his opponent, Kate Maxwell-Armstrong (Newcastle Uni), under pressure throughout the match. This proved too much for Kate, and Angus won 3-0 (13/11, 11/9, 11/3).
