The cup competitions culminated in an exciting finals day at The Northumberland Club on 12th April, as the 5 champions were crowned. It was a dominating display from the league champions involved, as all 5 cup winners completed league and cup doubles!

Ladies League Cup

In the Ladies League Cup, Northern Ladies 2 completed their ladies division 2 league and cup double by convincingly beating Primrose Ladies 5-0 in the final, although there were some close matches, especially at 5th string where Anna Morgan eventually coming out on top against Primrose’s Daisy Wake 3-2.

Men’s League Cup B

The Men’s League Cup B final saw div 4 champions Benwell Hill take on surprise finalists Consett 2, who had only just avoided relegation by winning a playoff match earlier in the week. Benwell proved too strong with div 4 player of the season Richie Mackett and Ian Charlton registering 3-0 wins it was always going to be an uphill battle for Consett, although they reduced the arrears with John Newstead’s 3-0 win over Anthony Bainbridge. But Jake Mottram then sealed the win and the cup for Benwell with a 3-0 victory over Tony Pensom, and Andrew Thomson completed a 4-1 Benwell win for the division 4 champions.

Men’s League Cup A

In Men’s League Cup A, no one could stop div 2 champions Northern Jrs 1 on their quest for an unbeaten season, as the juniors saw off Eldon 1, div 1 runners-up, 3-2 in the final! Aidan Mahoney and Sam Tufton got Northern Juniors off to a good start with 3-0 wins. Milo McKenzie reduced the arrears for Eldon with a 3-0 win against Shae Paterson, but Duncan Rutherford secured the match and the cup for Juniors by beating Simon Long 3-0. Mark Steven won Eldon’s second match 3-1, but by then it was all over.

Ladies Northumbria Cup

Newcastle Uni Ladies 1 won their 3rd successive Ladies’ Northumbria Cup by beating a 3-player Northumbria Ladies 1. Despite Eve Driver’s 3-0 win over Emma Turnbull at 1, wins from Mia Smith and Kate Maxwell-Armstrong ensured that the University went on to a comfortable 4-1 victory to complete their league and cup triumph.

Men’s Northumbria Cup

In the Men’s Northumbria Cup Northern 1 wrapped up the win early with 3-0 wins at 4, 3 and 2 from David Jackson, Mark Dinsley and Andrew Shipley. It was a closer affair at 5 but still a 3-2 win for Northern’s Craig Dowie vs Ben Tudor, and in the final match, Cai Younger played brilliantly to defeat Liam Gutcher 3-0 for a clean sweep as Northern did the double and reclaimed the cup they last won back in 2021/22!
