After a thrilling weekend of intense, top-level squash, the Northumbria Open 2025 concluded with the crowning of our tournament champions!
WOMEN’S PSA
Top seed Jasmine Thirst (WR #210) had cut through the draw without dropping a game to reach the final and face home-hopeful Shae Paterson, who beat no.3 seed Nadeen Ahmad in the quarters, and clubmate Tegan Younger in a tense semi-final.
Thirst showed her quality in the final and took control of the match from the off, and despite the support from the crowd, Shae was unable to make her mark. Jasmine won in straight games to claim the women’s title – her 2nd PSA satellite title! But we won’t be surprised if we see Shae in another final soon!

MEN’S PSA
Both men’s finalists made the top 2 against the odds, with neither being seeded to reach the final. 4 seed Lewis Doughty (WR #364) progressed to the final after a brutal 65-minute semi-final against Harith Danial, while AbdAllah Eissa, 5/8 seed and WR #369, had come through 2 seed Michael Creaven in the quarters!
The match started with a lung-busting rally that set the tone for the 1st game, as both players looked to take control of the T, and Eissa just edged the lengthy opener. Eissa then attacked the next 2 games with a flurry of high-quality winners to the front and back of the court, and although Doughty showed off his supreme retrieval abilities, he wasn’t able to keep up, and Eissa sealed the win – 11/7, 11/4, 11/2 to be crowned Men’s champion!

A EVENT
Top seeds Jack Cornell and Duncan Rutherford put on an entertaining display of attacking squash, where the momentum saw-sawed between the two in the first 2 games, Rutherford taking game 1 and Cornell levelling the score in the 2nd. The pace then seemed to take its toll on Cornell as his younger opponent continued relentlessly in the 3rd and 4th to take the win 3-1 – 11/4, 3/11, 11/6, 11/4.

B EVENT
Top seed Bertie Lamb showed his composure in the B final against rising-star James Southern. James took the lead in game 1, but Bertie clawed his way back in and edged the final few points to take the 1st game. The 2nd and 3rd were similar, with Bertie retrieving well and extending the rallies, and despite some moments of brilliance from James, Bertie held his nerve to win 3-0 – 11/9, 11/3, 11-9!

C EVENT
Steve Brown needed all his experience in his match-up against a dangerous Zoe Shipsey in the final of the C event. Steve took the lead in each of the games and, helped by some uncharacteristic errors from Zoe, won in straight sets, 11/5, 11/4, 11/3.
