Jesmond did not disappoint! 80 players travelled from Carlisle, Dumfries, Harrogate and more to stake their claim for the title in MatchPoint’s 2nd biggest one-day event on record. The club was a hive of activity for almost 12 hours as they got through an incredible 132 matches across 7 grades!
The A event attracted some big names, with WR #153 Will Salter topping the draw and looking to win his 2nd consecutive MatchPoint title. However, there were plenty of quality opponents aiming to challenge him for the silverware, including current Northumbria and Cumbria county champions Michael Mattimore and Ben Hetherington, and Hallamshire’s Adam Turner. All the big hitters made it through round 1, then in the semis, Salter eased past Turner, and the battle of Cumbria v Northumbria went the way of Hetherington.
The final was a high-quality affair. Salter set the tone early in game 1 with many lengthy rallies, and despite Hetherington’s array of attacking shots, Salter was able to soak up the pressure and take the opening game 11-7. The intensity seemed to take its toll on Hetherington in the 2nd, and Salter ran out 11-3 to take his 2nd title in 3 weeks!
