MatchPoint #29 Northern Open – Results

Back at the home of MatchPoint, Northern, for the 4th time on Sat 30th May, where 58 players from 23 different clubs joined us for a day of squash madness on a scorching May Saturday!

The A event was packed with home talent, and we were treated to a repeat of Northern’s recent club championship final in the semis, where Duncan Rutherford got his revenge against the newly crowned club champion, Sam Tufton, to book his spot in the final. Duncan was joined by top seed John Thompson, who overcame a feisty encounter against unseeded Colin Langley.

The final was a quality affair as both players showed a mix of excellent retrievals, inch-perfect drops, and attacking flair, and while both players traded blows throughout and put in an incredible effort in the heat, it was Duncan who emerged victorious to win his first MatchPoint title on home soil!

In the B event, Jordan Williams saw off Will Milne in 3 games, and Rich Marsden took down top seed Adam Coates to take the win in the C. The D event saw the ever-improving  Jack Hetherington, a 5/8 seed, beat the 1 seed Lara Krnic, while Michael Penketh came all the way from the qualifiers to win against home favourite Peter Thompson in the E event final.

E-grader Michael stole the limelight at yesterday’s event with a dominant statement in the E grade. He started the day having to qualify and went on to win the whole event taking out both of the top seeds in the process in some tightly fought games. He gained a 22% increase in SquashLevels on the day!

Junior of the Event – Yu-Yang Chiu (Northern)

Yu-Yang started the day as an unseeded junior in the D grade but that didn’t stop him from getting stuck into the more experienced players.
