The University of Warwick and Kenilworth Squash Club provided the venues for this season’s Aspire Team Championships, the flagship event for players involved in England Squash’s Aspire programme. Many of the country’s leading young squash talents get the chance to pull on their regional colours and test themselves against some of the strongest opposition in the country.
A new competition structure was introduced this year. Each region was represented by four teams: Girls A, Girls B, Boys A and Boys B, with 7 Northumbria players competing for the North East team across the 4 teams. The results from across the competitions were then combined to determine the overall regional champion.
Huey Lamb and Aidan Mahoney helped propel the Boys B team to first place, outperforming their seeding by beating South East 14-5 in the final! The Girls B team, including Elizabeth Muldoon-Smith and Salma Barkouk, reached the 3rd/4th playoff and claimed bronze on points countback!
In the A event, the Boys squad were victorious against South East, as James Southern and Duncan Rutherford both provided valuable wins in the final. Lucy Ullyat and the Girls A team also reached the final, but lost to a strong South East team to take home silver.
The North East very narrowly lost out on the regional overall title, getting pipped to the trophy by Team South East.
